What to automate on WhatsApp first, what to leave to humans, and how to set it up on the official API without getting your number banned.

Most businesses in Bangladesh already sell on WhatsApp. The problem isn't the channel. The problem is that one person answers every message by hand, between other jobs, and the slow replies cost sales.

This guide walks through what to automate first, what to keep human, and how to set it up properly.

Start with the questions you answer 50 times a day

Open your WhatsApp and scroll through last week's chats. You'll find the same five to ten questions again and again:

  • Price and availability ("Ache?", "Dam koto?")
  • Delivery time and charge
  • Size, colour or variant questions
  • Location and opening hours
  • Order status

These are the first things to automate. An AI agent trained on your product list, prices and policies can answer all of them in seconds, in Bangla, Banglish or English, matching whatever the customer writes.

Use the official API, not a "WhatsApp bot app"

There are two ways to automate WhatsApp:

  1. Unofficial tools that log into WhatsApp Web and send messages. They are cheap, and they get numbers banned.
  2. The official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API). This is what Meta supports. It allows automation, shared inboxes, message templates and broadcast campaigns, as long as you follow the rules: opt-in, templates for outbound messages, and an easy opt-out.

If WhatsApp is how you make money, only use the official API.

The four flows that pay back fastest

1. Instant reply to ad leads

Click-to-WhatsApp ads are popular because they feel personal, but most leads get a reply hours later. An AI agent replies in seconds, asks two or three qualifying questions, and passes hot leads to your sales person with a summary.

2. Order confirmation

For cash-on-delivery businesses, every unconfirmed order is a risk. An automatic confirmation message, with the order details and a "Confirm / Change" button, cuts fake orders and returned parcels.

3. Abandoned cart and "still interested?" follow-ups

Customers ask a price, then go quiet. A polite follow-up a few hours later, with a photo and the answer to their question, brings a surprising share of them back.

4. Delivery updates

"Your parcel is out for delivery" messages, linked to your courier's tracking, cut the "where is my order?" questions almost to zero.

What to keep human

Automation should make your team faster, not replace judgement. Keep humans on:

  • Complaints and refunds above a certain value
  • Custom orders and negotiations
  • Anything where the AI's confidence is low

A good setup hands the chat to a person with the full conversation and a one-line summary, so the customer never repeats themselves.

How long does it take?

A focused WhatsApp setup (API, AI agent, three or four flows and a shared inbox) usually goes live in 7–14 days. The longest step is often Meta's business verification, so start that early.

The bottom line

You don't need to automate everything. Automate the repetitive answers and the follow-ups humans forget, and give your team the time to close the sales that need a person.
