The Boost button vs Ads Manager: where your Facebook ad money actually goes

Boosting a post feels like advertising. Often it is just paying for likes. Here is what changes when you run campaigns properly in Ads Manager, and how to set up your first one without wasting budget.

The blue "Boost post" button is the most expensive button on Facebook for a lot of small businesses. Not because it costs a lot per click, but because it makes it very easy to spend money without getting what you actually wanted.

You boost a post, pick an audience, set a budget, and a few days later you have more likes and some comments. Did it sell anything? Usually nobody knows.

This post explains what Boost does, what Ads Manager does differently, and how to make the switch without needing to become a full-time media buyer.

What the Boost button is good for

Boost is not useless. It is a simplified version of Facebook's ad system, built for speed. It works reasonably well when your goal really is visibility or engagement: an announcement you want more people to see, an event, a post you want social proof on.

The problem is that most businesses are not boosting for visibility. They are boosting because they want sales or leads, and Boost gives them engagement instead.

Why boosted posts often do not sell

Meta's ad system is very good at delivering exactly what you ask for. When you boost a post for engagement, it finds people likely to like, comment and share. Those are not always the same people likely to buy.

You end up paying to reach people who enjoy reacting to posts. Your post looks popular, and your sales do not move.

Boost also gives you limited control. You cannot properly test different images or headlines against each other, you get fewer placement and audience options, and the reporting tells you little about what happened after the click.

What Ads Manager gives you

Ads Manager is the full tool. It looks intimidating at first, but the core ideas are simple.

You choose the real goal

Instead of "more engagement", you can tell the system what actually matters: messages, leads from a form, website purchases, WhatsApp conversations, calls. The algorithm then looks for people likely to do that specific thing.

You can test

You can run several ads in the same campaign, with different images, videos, headlines or offers, and see which ones bring results at a lower cost. Over a few weeks this is where most of the improvement comes from. Creative, not targeting, is usually the biggest lever.

You get proper tracking

With the Meta Pixel and Conversions API set up on your website, you can see which ads led to purchases and what each purchase cost. Without tracking, you are guessing.

You can retarget

You can show ads specifically to people who visited your website, watched your video, or messaged your page but did not buy. These warm audiences often convert far better than strangers.

A simple first campaign structure

You do not need a complicated setup to start. For a small business, this is a sensible first structure:

  1. One campaign with the objective that matches your sales process. If you sell through chat, use a messaging objective (Messenger or WhatsApp). If you sell on a website with tracking installed, use a sales objective.
  2. One or two ad sets with broad audiences in your delivery area. Meta's targeting has become strong enough that broad audiences often work well, especially when the creative clearly speaks to the right buyer.
  3. Three to five ads with different creatives: a product video, a customer review, a clear offer image, a short "problem and solution" clip.
  4. A budget you can leave alone for at least a week. Changing things daily resets the system's learning.

After a week or two, pause the ads that are clearly losing, put more behind the winners, and add new creatives to test against them.

Click-to-WhatsApp: the f-commerce favourite

For businesses that sell through conversation, click-to-WhatsApp ads are often the best fit. Someone taps the ad and lands straight in a WhatsApp chat with you, with a pre-filled message.

The weak point is what happens next. If nobody replies for three hours, you have paid for a lead and then let it go cold. Connecting these ads to an automated first response that greets, answers the common questions and qualifies the buyer makes a big difference. That is part of our WhatsApp automation work.

How much should you spend?

There is no single right number, but there is a minimum below which it is hard to learn anything. With too little budget, each ad gets so few results that you cannot tell winners from losers. For our managed clients we recommend at least around ৳15,000 or $300 a month in ad spend, paid directly to the platform, so the system has enough data to work with.

More important than the amount is consistency. A steady budget run for a month will teach you more than the same money spent in random bursts.

Signs your ads are set up badly

  • You cannot say what a sale or a lead costs you.
  • Every campaign uses the engagement objective.
  • You only ever run one ad at a time.
  • You change the audience or budget every couple of days.
  • Your website has no pixel, or nobody has checked whether it fires.
  • The ad sends people to a page that loads slowly or does not match the ad.

That last point is often overlooked. A great ad pointing at a slow, confusing landing page wastes money on every click. If your site is the problem, fix that first; our website development team builds landing pages specifically for ad traffic.

Should you do it yourself?

If you have the time to learn and a small budget, running your own campaigns in Ads Manager is very doable. Start with one campaign, keep it simple, and focus on making better creative.

If your time is better spent running the business, or you are already spending a meaningful amount every month and suspect it is not working, a managed setup pays for itself by cutting waste. Our paid ads management covers tracking, creative testing and weekly optimisation across Meta, Google and TikTok.
